Subversive Green Rhino first emerged as a 'zine in the true tradition of 'zines (in print) in 1991 with Temple Frazier and Anna Whitely as its creators. In typical fashion for its authors, the abbreviation (SGR) came FIRST.... They saw the letters on a license plate, liked them, and then thought of a name to fit the letters, thus abbreviating backwards ! After much consideration and pondering (or maybe not), Subversive Green Rhino was born !

The SGR 'zine tapped-into the minds of creative young people wandering the streets of Hyannis and other towns on Cape Cod (Massachusetts), publishing their poems, opinions, stories, and artwork. The print-editions were distributed to numerous locations around the Cape to be given-away for FREE to anyone who wanted to take a copy and read. The idea was: If you have something to say, then tell SGR and SGR will try to help you say it to more people ! SGR never made money and it was never intended to do so.

Episode One of SGR was released in late Summer 1991, following Hurricane Bob. The back cover informed readers that it was “NOT the special Hurricane Bob Issue !” Subsequent episodes of SGR were released somewhat quarterly, but who can keep track of quarters if you're not some heartless corporate bean-counter ? Episodes came out when they were ready to.

I joined SGR as an assistant editor and contributor in 1997, beginning with Episode Nine. Two more episodes followed. The most recent print 'zine (Episode 11) was released in the Winter of 1999/2000.

In the Summer of 2008, SGR is gearing-up for another Episode of the good old-fashioned PRINT 'zine ! We know there are people out there, who still like to read.... There are still people out there who like to write, draw, and take photos.... There will always be people out there with opinions that they'd like to share.

Episode 12 is coming (though I thing the whole quarterly thing is about ten years late) ! Oh well, you can't rush creativity !

Co-Editor, SGR
